Why I volunteer with Zero Carbon Harrogate – and why you should too

By Anna Slatcher, ZCH volunteer

What would you do if you wanted to make a difference in your community while tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time? For me, the answer was simple: I signed up to be a volunteer with the climate action charity Zero Carbon Harrogate (ZCH).

When my family and I relocated to Harrogate from London, I was eager to find a way to contribute locally. Sustainability has always been a part of my career, and I saw ZCH as the perfect opportunity to share my expertise and connect with like-minded people. My journey began with small contributions, like helping to promote campaigns such as Car Free Fridays and Walk to School on social media. Before long, I found myself writing articles for the Harrogate Advertiser and the blog (just like this!) sharing actionable tips to inspire others to take climate action and occasionally supporting with events.

Over time, what started to meet people and settle into a new town became so much more. I’ve loved seeing the creativity of local schools in their Walk to School events and have been inspired by ZCH’s guest speakers like Professor Piers Forster, who brought fresh insights and hope to our shared cause.

A memorable moment was hearing my daughter excitedly tell me about her school’s ‘Walk to School Day’ — to me it was proof that the message is getting through to the younger generation, and that what we are doing matters.

Volunteering has reminded me of the incredible dedication and passion people bring to community-driven causes. Everyone at ZCH works tirelessly, whether it’s organising events, sharing knowledge, or engaging with schools and residents. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and it’s taught me the power of collective action.

But volunteering isn’t just about what you give; it’s also about what you get. For me, it’s been a sense of belonging and purpose, knowing I’m contributing to something bigger than myself; volunteering really is "good for the soul."

So why should you consider volunteering — especially for a cause like this?

First, it’s a great way to meet new people and build connections, whether you’re new to the area like I was or just looking to expand your social circle. Second, you’ll develop new skills and perspectives. And finally, you’ll feel the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a tangible impact, whether it’s in reducing emissions, raising awareness, or inspiring others.

Zero Carbon Harrogate always welcomes fresh faces and ideas. Whether you’re passionate about education, business or advocacy, there’s a role for everyone. You don’t need to be an expert — just willing to roll up your sleeves and get involved. And it helps to be adapatable – if you like variation, instead of taking on a role or a specific area, you can just pick up and leave tasks as you wish! So why not take that first step today, and help this wonderful charity to do even more great work?

Visit our support us page to learn more about how you can make a difference. Together, we can build a brighter, more sustainable future for Harrogate and beyond.
